WHAT IS A ROOT CANAL TREATMENT & WHAT IS THE CAUSE?

Arena Dental is proud to offer root canal treatments to our patients. This procedure is necessary when the soft tissue inside the tooth, known as the pulp, becomes damaged or infected. During treatment, an opening is made in the crown of the tooth in order to access the pulp chamber. Next, we remove the dying or infected tissues before thoroughly cleaning the empty canals.

Finally, we seal off the chamber to prevent anything like bacteria or food from re-entering the tooth. After a root canal, you’ll need to have a crown made to protect the weak, non-vital structure that’s left. We’ll match the crown to the colour of your neighbouring teeth so that it blends in with your overall smile.

SIGNS YOU MAY HAVE A ROOT CANAL

At Arena Dental, we know that a root canal treatment can sometimes be necessary to save a tooth that has been damaged by decay or injury. But what are the signs that you may need a root canal?:

  • NERVE DAMAGE

One symptom of nerve damage is a gradual darkening of your tooth. This is caused by blood flow changes in the tooth and can also be a sign of previous trauma, even if it occurred several years or decades earlier.

  • CAVITIES

Another symptom to look for is a large cavity extending into the nerve. If you have a cavity that is getting larger and causes pain when you bite down or eat, this could be a sign that the nerve is damaged, and you may need a root canal.

  • FRACTURED OR BROKEN TEETH

Fractured teeth or broken roots can also damage the nerve, causing pain and sensitivity. If you have had an injury to your mouth or teeth, you must see your dentist immediately to check for damage.

  • SENSITIVITY

Finally, sensitivity to heat or pressure can be an indicator of nerve damage. If your tooth hurts when you drink hot coffee or eat ice cream, this could be a sign that you need a root canal.

DO ROOT CANAL’S HURT?

There is a common misconception that root canals are painful. However, at Arena Dental, we keep you comfortable by numbing the area around the tooth, so you should only feel pressure during the procedure but no pain. If you are experiencing discomfort leading up to your appointment, it is likely due to swelling, and we may prescribe an antibiotic to reduce the infection.

You will be numbed with local anaesthetic during the procedure and should feel no pain. You may feel pressure at times, but this is normal and nothing to be concerned about. In some cases, a dental dam may be used to isolate the tooth being treated. This helps to keep the area clean and free of saliva during the procedure.
