Sleep Apnoea Treatment at Arena Dental

Woman holding pillow over ears while man snoresObstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is a type of breathing disorder that results in airway blockage while you’re sleeping. This particular form of sleep disordered breathing is typically due to loose or large tissues at the back of the mouth and upper airway.

When you sleep, your jaw slips backward and the tongue, soft palate, tonsils and upper airway seal against one another. In such situations, airflow is blocked off, depriving the brain of oxygen. As a result, people gasp, snore or start to wake up, which is the body’s way of telling itself to breathe.

What Is SomnoMed?

SomnoMed is an oral sleep appliance we recommend at Arena Dental that naturally treats and manages certain types of sleep apnoea, like OSA. It can only be made and delivered by your dentist.

When you wear a SomnoMed appliance, the mouthpiece guides your lower jaw forward in a way that reduces airway blockage near the back of the mouth. Some people respond to SomnoMed so well that they’re able to give up their CPAP machine.

Sleep Better, Live Healthier

Chronic sleeping disorders like sleep apnoea can affect your lifestyle and underlying health. Did you know that sleep-disordered breathing is related to medical problems like:

  • Fatigue
  • High blood pressure
  • Depression
  • Weight gain
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Diabetes
  • Acid reflux
  • Worn, broken teeth

What Are the Symptoms?

Sleep apnoea is often diagnosed later than it should be, because of the hidden warning signs and how testing is performed.

If you wake up with headaches or already tired, your sleep partner notices that you snore or gasp for air in your sleep or if you have a large neck circumference, then you could have sleep apnoea.

Some of our SomnoMed patients have already been diagnosed with sleep apnoea and use a CPAP appliance. Others are in the early stages of screening and may need a home sleep study or to see a pulmonologist. At Arena Dental we’ll guide you through the appropriate steps to gain a proper diagnosis and move forward with treatment.
